Springtime in Atlanta Swap Meet Video

The Coca-Cola Collectors Club Atlanta Chapter held their annual "Springtime In Atlanta" event April 8-11. This is always a fun event filled with thousands of collectibles both common and hard to find alike. This year, during the swap meet, my colleague, Adam Brown, tagged along to see what the buzz is all about. I'm sure you'll like this video he put together about the experience - and look for my special hat!

Belgium “Our Animals” Bottle Cap Promotion

For the last post highlighting our Earth Day exhibit, I’ll share this bottle cap promotion from Belgium that tested my French language skills. In collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, The Company created two nature preserves in Belgium in 1978. We ran a bottle crown and poster promotion to collect all of the animals of Belgium found under bottle crowns. Some crowns had the WWF “Panda” symbol and for each “Panda” crown sent in, The Company and its bottlers offered donations to the WWF to build the nature preserve. We actually had to try to recall some French to match up the animals on the bottle caps to their proper locations on the map! (I think we did OK).

Man in His Environment Ecology Kit

Coca-Cola School Ecology Kit Cover Image - Man in His Environment - Earth Day
In the early 1970s, The Company produced and distributed "Man In His Environment", a basic teaching kit to introduce students in grades four and up to environmental issues.  The kit helped students discover for themselves the basic principles of ecology: management of resources and planning, when each action taken affects the environment. The kit was designed so the students not told the answers, rather they had to become involved in the decisions and discover answers for themselves. For example, the students role-played as planners deciding whether or not to build a variety of industrial, commercial and recreational improvements on the board that simulated a natural environment. The kit was distributed to schools throughout the country, with a 36 page teacher’s guide. Have you ever seen this game, which is now a collectible?

The Bottle for The Age of Ecology

Happy Earth Day! Did you know that in 1970, The Coca-Cola Company launched an advertising campaign to promote the returnable Coca-Cola bottle as the logical answer to some of the solid waste problems facing the environment? The theme for this series of ads provided a public service message to point out the responsibility of consumers in the area of litter. The copy on this ad reads: “What the world needs today are containers that recycle… So buy Coca-Cola in returnable bottles. It’s best for the environment and your best value.”

“Bend A Little” and "Keep America Beautiful"

Here are a few more artifacts that we pulled out from the Archives to celebrate Earth Day. In 1970, The Company launched an anti-litter campaign featuring the slogan, "Bend A Little". The goal of the "Bend A Little" campaign was to remind people that cleaning up America called for a little extra effort from all of us. The ads depicted people "bending a little" to keep America green and clean. Our bottlers ran special promotions giving away these "Bend A Little" litter bags featured in this case:

The Company was also one of the strongest supporters of a nationwide campaign in the early 1970s called "Keep America Beautiful." An interesting fact about the 1973 K.A.B. Day poster shown below is that, along with the six other Coke Archives posters we have in our Earth Day display, it was framed using all environmentally friendly materials. The frame’s wood moulding is made from 100% recycled materials, keeping mature trees standing and the mounting board is made from 100% biodegradable and 100% recycled materials. Someone joked that we keep “recycling all of our old stuff” from Archives!

Coca-Cola Ecology Fountain Cup

As I am sure you are aware, this Wednesday, April 22, is Earth Day. We have been celebrating this event all month long here at Coca-Cola Headquarters, and we've even created a display of artifacts from our Archives celebrating Earth Day.  On the blog this week, I’ll be sharing some images of the items on exhibit, along with some “did you know” facts. The first picture I’d like to share is this Coca-Cola “Ecology” Soda Fountain cup that I know Coke collectors will love. Have any of you seen this fountain cup before?
